EGAT shows its potential in sustainable energy transition through “Triple S” strategy and Mae Moh Green Model, Lampang Province under Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition in the side event of the 80th Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

On April 26, 2024, Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, Assistant Governor – Generation 2, representing the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), delivered the opening remarks for the conference “Side Event: Connecting Voices, Transforming Coal Regions for a Better World by Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI JET),” as part of the 80th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) at Conference Room 4, United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok.

Mr. Suttipong Chalermkiat, EGAT Assistant Governor – Generation 2 said that the conference is a vital international platform for fostering knowledge and experience to enable a fair and inclusive energy transition from coal to renewable energy, which requires collaboration of all sectors. EGAT is an organization which underlines its commitment to a greener and sustainable future through the ‘Triple S’ strategy comprising Source Transformation: increasing the proportion of renewable energy in electricity generation and upgrading power plants and the electricity system with modern technology, Sink Co-creation: absorbing more carbon dioxide, and Support Measures Mechanism: promoting public participation in energy efficiency. Moreover, to develop a comprehensive just transition plan for the Mae Moh coal mine in Lampang Province, EGAT has collaborated with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) under the Sustainable Development Goal-7 Roadmap. Under the collaboration, EGAT has learned from experts, policy-makers, the coal industry, trade unions, and civil society organizations from different countries. EGAT can leverage this wealth of knowledge to implement practices by integrating local experiences into global conversations and advance expertise in just energy transition. This will promote an eco-friendly energy industry, leading to a low-carbon society.

Mae Moh Green Model of EGAT Mae Moh aims for the transition from coal to renewable energy by developing the energy sources in the area, including biomass, solar power, pumped storage, hydrogen, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Moreover, there is the development of agricultural community using modern innovations in organic farming and grass cultivation for animal husbandry for the sustainable self-reliance of the community. With an analysis of the benefits, advantages, and disadvantages to the economy and society in the area for ensuring readiness among the public, the environment, and management. EGAT aims to foster a just energy transition for all stakeholders.

The side event: Connecting Voices, Transforming Coal Regions for a Better World by Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition (IKI JET) organized by GIZ Thailand and the partners aims to monitor and promote the implementation of member countries under the Innovation Regions for a Just Energy Transition project, discussing possibilities and challenges in energy transition as well as accelerating cooperation and knowledge exchange.
