Krabi Power Plant

(Krabi Province)

Thermal power plant
Fuel oil/Palm oil
315 MW
Being a plant of “Reserved Shutdown” to strengthen security of the power system

Background

The discovery of lignite in the South at Krabi Province has started Thai dependence on local energy to be used as fuel for electricity generation which led to the construction of Krabi Power Plant or formerly known as Krabi Lignite-Fired Power Plant.

Krabi Lignite-Fired Power Plant is the first and only one power plant which uses lignite as fuel. The power plant consists of 3 Units of 20 MW each having total generating capacity of 60 MW. It supplied electricity since 1964 serving the demand for electricity in the Lower South until it expired and was decommissioned from the system on September 30, 1995 after 31 years of operation.

On April 29, 1996 the new Krabi Power Plant was constructed at the former site. The power plant has started commercial operation in 2004 to strengthen security of the power system in the South.

At present, Krabi Power Plant has improved its production process to use palm oil and fuel oil in electricity generation in response to the government policy to support the low price of raw palm oil.

Characteristics of the power plant

At present, Krabi Power Plant has the contractual generating capacity of 315 MW.

  • It is classified as “Reserved Shutdown” to enhance security of the power system.
